Dr. Alison D’Andelet
Dr. Alison D’Andelet grew up in Frederick, MD and attended high school at St. John’s at Prospect Hall. She attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she received a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and minors in Literature and Anthropology. She then continued her education at Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA, where she received her doctorate and a master’s degree in Healthcare Administration in 2015. During school, she was a member of the Pi Delta National Honor Society, Editor-in-Chief of the college newsletter, and an active leader in other student groups. Dr. D’Andelet completed her residency at Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Hospital in Binghamton, NY, where she was trained by world-renowned podiatric foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Guido LaPorta. During her residency she had extensive exposure to pediatrics, sports medicine, foot and ankle reconstruction, and diabetic limb salvage. She also did a rotation at Sinai Hospital’s Rubin Institute of Advanced Orthopedics in Baltimore, MD, learning advanced foot and ankle reconstruction techniques
During her time in residency, she was active in publishing case studies and papers about wound care, the diabetic Charcot foot, and surgical planning. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family. She also enjoys running and doing yoga. She is excited to join Dr. Schultheiss at Harford Lower Extremity Specialists so she can continue to work with patients of all ages to keep their feet healthy.
Dr. Travis J. Dwyer
Dr. Travis J. Dwyer, DPM grew up in Ridgefield, Connecticut and attended Ridgefield High School. High school is where Travis displayed his drive, and passion to succeed, displayed his love for competitive ice hockey. Rising to the top of his game, he furthered his hockey experience and skills playing in the New England Prep School league. He transferred to, played for, and graduated from, Salisbury Preparatory School in Salisbury, Connecticut. He continued to advance in his sport, playing NCAA Ice Hockey at Neumann University in Aston, Pennsylvania. During his time at Neumann University, he was awarded both the Student Athletic Achievement Award and the Academic Award of Excellence multiple times. He successfully made the Vice Presidents List every semester during college. Dr. Dwyer eventually graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
Travis then went on to become a research technician at Thomas Jefferson University in the Hematology department. He conducted cancer research with his team and explored the origins of Acute Megakaryoblastic Leukemia. After his time at Thomas Jefferson, he went on to further his education at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. There he earned an Admissions Scholarship and was recognized in the “Who’s Who of Podiatric Medical Students” as well as earning his Doctorate in Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Dwyer completed his Residency training at Christiana Care Hospital in Wilmington/Newark, Delaware where he developed exemplary surgical skills in forefoot, rearfoot, and ankle surgery. During his residency he also had extensive exposure to podiatric sports medicine, diabetic limb salvage, foot and ankle reconstruction, and wound care. Dr. Dwyer completed a rotation at the prestigious Sinai Hospital’s Institute of Advanced Orthopedics in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was exposed to clubfoot foot treatment using the Ponseti casting method, as well as having exposure to advanced limb lengthening procedures, and unique foot and ankle reconstruction techniques.
Prior to be recruited to Harford Lower Extremity Specialists, Dr. Dwyer worked for a large group practice in Delaware where he was the lead surgeon for the group. During that time in Delaware, Dr. Dwyer had many amazing accomplishments. First, he became an active staff podiatrist and an attending for the resident training committee at Christiana Care Hospital, where he was actively involved in training and teaching the Podiatry residents and students. He was also an active staff member at St. Francis Hospital, where he facilitated further exposure to the podiatric residents to a variety of forefoot, rearfoot, and ankle surgeries. Dr. Dwyer became an active staff podiatrist at Union Hospital, where he met Dr. Schultheiss, and became a top panel physician at Union Hospital’s Wound Care clinic. Dr. Dwyer is very involved in podiatry, recognized by his peers, voted as President of Delaware’s Podiatric Medicine Association, where he served for 2 years. His surgical reputation also allowed him to teach other podiatrists at advanced surgical courses on a national level. He was a panel physician and instructor for Osteomed’s National Foot and Ankle Skills and Master course.
During his time away from practicing podiatry, Dr. Dwyer enjoys weightlifting, being outdoors fishing, and especially spending quality time with his family and friends. Dr. Travis J. Dwyer, DPM joins the team at Harford Lower Extremity Specialists dedicated to improving patient care and outcomes. He offers extensive experience and comprehensive knowledge in treatment of multiple podiatric conditions. He is very excited to join HLES and will continue to provide the excellent individualized podiatric medical and surgical care our patients have come to expect.
Dr. Howard Schultheiss
Imagine visiting your diabetic grandfather in the hospital. Everything seems fine and as far as you know, the only problem is a wound on his leg. Sadly, he passes away not too long after your visit. Dr. Schultheiss recounts this childhood memory as one of his most vivid. Little did he know, this moment in time would eventually propel him into the field of Podiatry.
Born and raised in Queens, New York, Howard had a strong family oriented childhood. He attended Bayside High School where he participated in competitive swimming, became the team captain and led the 200 medley relay team to win and hold the New York state record for seven years. He attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY on a full swimming scholarship majoring in Chemistry. Early leadership aspirations expanded swimming into water polo, being a team captain again, and proudly leading his team to a dramatic win at the prestigious West Point Academy. He developed and presided as President of the Science and Botanical Society and loved caring for his prized Gardenias. Education, competition and a desire to travel, he soon became a highly decorated tri athlete. A 3rd place overall win in Oxford, MD qualified him for the Iron Man Triathalon in Hawaii. Graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Howard was interested in working in a research laboratory, but also considered post graduate study. There was still that childhood calling to have a role in helping grandparents and grandchildren spend more quality years together. He made his decision to become a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. This felt natural, as he could combine his love of chemistry, the love of his grandfather and his nurturing yet competitive nature to make positive changes in many peoples’ lives.
Temple School of Podiatric Medicine was his first move away from family and brought many challenges. These years developed his very conservative, frugal and resourceful lifestyle. He completed his residency at the Wilmington Veterans Administration. The experience of caring for our countries veterans, seeing the depth in their eyes and seeing the loss of limbs, was the fuel that sparked the fire to combine all of his skills and become a leader in proactive wound care, limb salvage and overall foot health and function. He is now a member of multiple State and National Podiatry and Wound Care organizations and has dual Board Certification in Podiatric Medicine, Surgery and Wound Care.
In 1991, Dr. Schultheiss started his practice in Bel Air and was blessed with rapid growth and quickly rose from 35 patients a week to 35 patients a day! As the diversity of cases grew so did the quest for advanced education and services. Dr. Schultheiss was determined to bring the specialists needed for complex cases right here to the community. Having been teamed with Maryland Vascular Associates for many years, a full service vascular laboratory was built to provide rapid and even same day vascular testing. This team approach continues to flourish and early intervention of vascular complications has been crucial in preventing amputations. In 2009, Harford Lower Extremity Specialists became the first Podiatric specific Ambulatory Surgical Center in Maryland to achieve the gold seal of approval with accreditation by the Joint Commission. This accreditation brought an even higher standard for patient safety and infection control.
After years of hard work and dedication, Dr. Schultheiss and Harford Lower Extremity Specialists has become a highly referred to destination for patients. The practice is very dynamic, dedicated to continually seeking advanced technology and techniques. The next challenge is finding another Podiatrist with the same passion and commitment to carry on the mission of Harford Lower Extremity Specialists.
